Common Misconceptions regarding Differentiated Instruction
It is incompatible with standards. How are we ever able to teach students differently and assess them the same? The truth is the standards are curriculum based and what we are teaching. Differentiation is not a curriculum model, it's an instruction model. It should make sense to the kids to get them where they need to go.
Its for a special kind of kid. All of us have preferred ways of learning and ways of learning that don’t work. All children are individuals and need to be seen that way by teachers. We need to manage the classroom with flexibility and be able to differentiate when needed.
All of us already do that- As soon as we tell ourselves that we already do that, we are closed off to any sense of growth. Most all of us understand that there are some students that need extra or different attention. The majority of teachers will see a student finish and then give extra work, that’s called reactive differentiation. This means the teacher is depending on the student to give the signal. A good model of differentiation is proactive, you need a systematic plan. This means you need very clear sense of what the students need to do and where they are in relation to that, Then you can adapt your instruction so that all students are engaged.
As educators we should have a sense of constant growth for ourselves and our students.

So let's not be like Mr.Grimes here.....
Instead let's treat our students as individuals by using differentiated instruction. Our responsibilities as educators is to mentor, stimulate, provoke, and engage.
